Like (music drama)
Like is the most important drama in central Thailand, a mixture of Thai traditional and classical arts. Its charms lie in the combination of extravagant costumes and myriad changes of each plays sharing the same storyline. That is to say, the performances depend mainly on the actors' skills of improvisation and the audiences' imagination.
Like is performed by actors and actresses playing particular types of characters, viz. hero,heroine, villain, jealous woman (villainess)and joker (male or female clowns). The performers improvise their dialogues and song lyrics during the performance following the scenario provided by a story-teller.The plots tell a large number of both stories in earlier times and modern ones with a light and comic style.Costumes may be traditional, modern or a combination of the two.
Historically, Like has roots in Muslim chant (Dikay)and Buddhist recitation (Suat phramalai),and is likely to emergingas a distinct form of theatre in the late 19th century.Nowadays, though becoming rarer,Like still enjoys a certain popularity in Thai society. The performances mainly take place in rural areas, at temple fairs and private sponsored events.
Thanks to its flexibility, Like can maintain its firm position to bring people happy and cheerful moments via a distinctive folk art form.
