Mo lam (folk song)

Bookmark and Share

Forgetting Mo lam must be a big mistake when talking about Thai art forms. Analogous to country and Western music in the USA, this folk tradition has a deep root in the northeastern region of Thailand known as Isaan.

The music often tells tales of woe related to unrequited love with social and humorous commentary. The melody is vivified by the khene, a mouth organ made of bamboo pipes of different sizes, among other instruments.

Mo lam style in its earliest time has a simple but very constant bass beat topped by vocal melodies. Mo lam today has a spectacular transformation with the aid of electrical guitars and electronic instruments. Thanks to it, this music genre can survive and thrive despite the massive influx of western culture.

Thailand can be proud of its growing showbiz, which posses numerous pop stars such as Tata Young or Noona Neungthida while having such characteristic music genres as Mo lam.
