Nora Dance

Bookmark and Share

The Nora is the final representative of Thai dance to complete a performing art tour around the kingdom. This southernmost dance is the oldest surviving form of Thai dance drama.

The name Nora is shortened from the name Manohra, the standard heroine of an ancient tale, which often serves as the plot material for this type of dancedrama. The original story tells about alocal prince settingoff to rescue Manohra, his lover. As she is a woman-birdprincess, the danceis often called the “Women’s Bird Dance”. Nowadays, the dances are more diverse with different stories.

The choreography of the Nora dance varies regionallybut is generally composed of 12 positions and 17 movements. Its attractiveness comes from sophisticated movements:angular movements, wide-open leg positions, and extremely expressive finger movements specified bylong fake nails. The dancers do not walk but slide their feet, creating a superb performance to be seen.

In recent decadesthe nora has become increasingly popular.Popular forms have also evolved, such as nora karaoke and rock nora. Thusthe nora has become a kind of trademark of southern Thai culture.
