Queen's Birthday
Her Majesty the Queen's birthday is an important day for Thai people. It celebrates the birthday of their beloved Queen and as it is chosen to be National Mother's Day in Thailand. The festival is an occasion for Thais to show their respect to their Queen and express their love and thanks to their mothers.
Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, extremely popular among her subjects, was born on August 12, 1932. She won the hearts of many with her love and affection towards mankind and her contribution to Thai culture. She deserves credit for reviving several Thai folk arts and crafts.
The festival is held on August 12 with the decoration of public places and houses. People enthusiastically take part in activities throughout the country. Portraits of Her Majesty are hung everywhere and people show their respect towards her. Charitable works are carried out in several places. Thai people also partake in alms-giving ceremonies and candlelit ritual. Also celebrated as National Mother’s Day, the festival is a chance for children to show their love and gratitude to their mothers. Children give gifts to their mothers. Jasmine is shown everywhere to symbolically pay respect to a mother, who gives birth to her child.
