Thailand Muslims

Bookmark and Share

Muslim is the second largest religion of the country, making up 4 percent more or less of all Thai practitioners. The religion is mainly practiced in the South, where the majority of Malaysian descents live. This reflects the common cultural heritage Thailand's southern provinces sharing with Malaysia.

Muslim in Thailand is gradually blended with some beliefs and incomplete practice of Islam. The most obvious example lies in the similarity between Malaysian animism, which is believed to expel evil spirits, and Thai Muslim rituals.

The government shows substantial support for Muslim, both inspirationally and financially. Each year the King or his representative presides overcommemorationof the Prophet Muhammad's birthday. Moreover, His Majesty appoints a respected Muslim religious leader as Chularajamontri, or State Counselor for all Islamic affairs. The government also provides funds for building and renovating mosques.

Thailand's Muslims enjoy thoroughstate support and are free to teach and practice their religion fully according to their own tenets.
