Visakha Bucha
Along with Makha Bucha, Viakha Bucha is one of the most important religious festivals in Buddhist calendar, falling usually on the full moon day of the sixth lunar month. It becomes the public holiday in many Mekong countries such as Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand.
It offers devout Buddhists occasion to worship and recollect the wisdom, purity and compassion of the Buddha.
Visakha Bucha signifies the three important milestones in the life of Buddha: the birth, the enlightenment and the death. They all miraculously fall on the same day and month. On this day, Buddhists worldwide will gather together to listen to sermons on teachings of Buddha, make merits at temples. In some temples, candlelight processions or “Wien Tien” will be performed with candle, incense and lotus flower carrying.
Establishments such as schools and government offices will also fly yellow Buddhist flags for the day. Because it is a holy day, alcohol sale is forbidden in shops, bars and restaurants.
